U.S. Shopping App Session Count Increased 66% In Q4 2020

A lot has changed in 2020. For example, consumers’ shopping habits have undergone considerable changes. These changes will also affect sellers’ marketing plans in 2021.

Data from market research firm Apptopia shows that downloads of shopping apps increased by nearly 17% globally in the fourth quarter of 2020, and by 18% in the United States. Many of these downloads were contributed by consumers making purchases using the app for the first time.

As the year 2020 progresses, mobile shoppers are turning to apps to find the best online deals. Amazon, Target and Walmart all performed well, with Amazon becoming the top retailer in 2020.

Not only that, installations of the “Buy Now, Pay Later” app soared 136%, and web visits to coupon website CouponXoo increased 742% year-on-year.

Apptopia’s report also shows that the number of sessions on U.S. shopping apps increased 66% in the fourth quarter of 2020 compared to 2019.

U.S. shopping app session count increased 66% in Q4 2020

As can be seen from the figure above, in terms of application sessions, China topped the list with 29 billion sessions in 2020, while this figure was still 27 billion in 2019. Its growth is evident.

Notably, the number of app sessions grew even more rapidly in the United States and Brazil. Taking the United States as an example, the number of shopping application sessions was still 14 billion in 2019. In 2020, it increased by more than 60% to 23 billion, second only to China.

In addition, Apptopia's report also mentioned that social networks are the main driver of e-commerce traffic, they brought a 30% traffic increase and contributed 2.4% of the traffic.

Among them, 40.2% of the social media traffic of e-commerce brands comes from Facebook, and YouTube accounts for 30.5%, followed by Instagram (3.2%), Twitter (10.1%), Pinterest (5%) and Reddit (5%).

From the above data, it is not difficult to find that during the epidemic, the increase in time consumers spent on mobile devices greatly promoted the download and use of shopping applications. App Annie's report also well confirms this. Data shows that global consumers spent 82 billion hours on shopping apps in 2020, an increase of 30% from 2019.

Shopping apps are favored by consumers. Once again, sellers realize that mobile devices have become an important channel for consumers to participate in marketing activities. Sellers should also pay more attention to marketing through this channel.
