TikTok Deleted More Than 3.5 Million Advertising Videos In Half A Year Due To Violation Of Advertising Policies

According to foreign media reports, TikTok released its global transparency report for the second half of 2020 (July 1 to December 31) last Wednesday. The report shows that TikTok deleted more than 89 million videos globally in the second half of last year, accounting for 1% of all videos on the platform.

Among them, the five countries with the largest number of deleted videos are: the United States (11.776 million), Pakistan (8.216 million), Brazil (7.507 million), Russia (4.575 million) and India (3.86 million).

According to the report, the following are the most common reasons why videos are removed:

1. Child safety: This type of illegal videos accounted for 36%, and in the first half of 2020, it accounted for 22.3%.

2. Adult nudity and sexual behavior: accounting for 20.5%, accounting for 30.9% in the first half of 2020.

3. Illegal activities and regulated goods: accounting for 17.9%, a slight decrease from 19.6% in the first half of 2020.

4. Violence and explicit content: accounting for 8.1%, compared with 8.7% in the first half of 2020.

5. Harassment and bullying: accounting for 6.6%, compared with 2.5% in the first half of 2020.

6. Suicide, self-harm and risky behaviors: accounting for 6.2%, a decrease of 13.4% compared with the first half of 2020.

7. Completeness and authenticity: 2.4%, compared with 1.2% in the first half of 2020.

8. Hateful behavior: 2%, compared with 0.8% in the first half of 2020.

9. Violent extremism: accounting for 0.3%, consistent with the proportion in the first half of 2020.

In addition to the common reasons for video deletion mentioned above, TikTok’s 2020 Transparency Report also stated that in addition to account and video deletion, as many as 3.501 million ads were removed for violating TikTok’s advertising policies and guidelines.

(i) is harmful, harassing, profane, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, paedophilic, libelous, invasive of another's privacy, racially or otherwise objectionable, disparaging, associated with or encourages money laundering, gambling, or in any other way illegal conduct;

(ii) Harm minors in any way;

or (iii) deceive or mislead recipients as to the origin of such messages, or convey any information that is grossly offensive or threatening.

In addition, TikTok also deleted 6.144 million accounts for violating application guidelines in the second half of 2020, and deleted nearly 9.5 million additional spam accounts, as well as 5.226 million spam videos posted by these accounts.

However, content creators who object to TikTok’s deletion of videos or accounts can also appeal to the platform. Through this right, TikTok has also restored 2.927 million short videos.

Finally, during the epidemic, TikTok also used related technologies to automatically detect and delete illegal video content in certain markets, such as Brazil and Pakistan. In this way, TikTok has automatically marked and deleted approximately 8.295 million videos.
