According to international media reports, Indonesian Minister of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises Teten Masduki confirmed on October 24 that TikTok CEO Zhou Shouzi had applied for talks with Indonesian President Joko. Teten has been instructed by President Joko Widodo to meet with Zhou Suizi next week or sometime thereafter.

"TikTok intends to expand its e-commerce business in Indonesia. However, regulations require that all e-commerce companies that want to sell or operate in Indonesia must set up an office in Indonesia and must comply with relevant regulations and obtain a license." Teten said.

Teten particularly emphasized that one of the regulations TikTok needs to comply with is to separate social media and e-commerce businesses. Indonesia maintains an open stance towards foreign investment, including e-commerce, but the government has the right to regulate to protect other economic sectors. This meeting will discuss whether TikTok’s future operations in Indonesia will be to establish a new platform or invest in a local platform.
